Abstract

The smart service revolution has deeply changed the posture of modern digital systems that are based on (micro)services developed using cloud-native technologies, composed at run time with orchestration platforms, and continuously monitored to ensure scalability and elasticity. Their computation is often based on non-determinist machine learning models and split among heterogeneous components (from minuscle sensors and devices to cloud and edge nodes), resulting in a multi-faceted cloud-edge deployment. These digital systems govern many aspects of our everyday's life improving the efficiency and effectiveness of day-to-day activities. The price we pay for such convenience is an increased risk for user's security and privacy, and a perceived lack of trustworthiness. In this context, security assurance has been adopted as the preferred means to evaluate systems' behavior and address this need of trustworthiness. The seminar will discuss the last trends in security assurance, introducing two main research topics: i) security certification of modern distributed systems, ii) assurance-based risk evaluation.
